The project "CCU-Tailor: Design and Optimization of CO2 capture and conversion processes tailored to the industrial context" was the winner of the José Manuel de Mello 2024 - Entrepreneurship grant from the Amélia de Mello Foundation, worth 150 thousand euros.
Also part of the team are Pedro Mendes (researcher at ZeolCat/CQE), Henrique Matos (researcher at CERENA) and Carmen Bacariza (researcher at CQE) and the award was presented by His Excellency, the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa to Isabel Marrucho, president of the CQE and professor at the DEQ, representing the team on June 28th at the Centro Cultural de Belém.
ZeolCat.pt is a research group belonging to Centro de Química Estrutural (CQE), the largest Research Unit of ULisboa that gathers broad and interdisciplinary areas within the scope of Chemistry. ZeolCat stands for catalysis by zeolites that is part of the history of catalysis in Portugal.
ZeolCat.pt group is essentially dedicated to zeolitic materials and multifunctional nanoporous materials with applications in catalysis and adsorption, covering four main areas: Tunable Porous Materials Synthesis; Advanced Zeolite and Catalyst Characterization; Multipurpose Catalytic Performance Evaluation; Tailored Multi-scale modelling.
By focusing on these research areas, we can contribute to the development of sustainable processes and the production of renewable fuels and chemicals, thus supporting the global transition towards a cleaner and more renewable energy.
The valorization of biomass or other unconventional sustainable feedstocks, recyclable plastics, carbon capture and utilization and environmental remediation technologies are part of the goals of the research areas. Solar light-driven photocatalysis, by developing efficient and stable photocatalytic materials, and optimizing photocatalytic systems for various chemical transformations and environmental remediation are also another goal of the group.
The research activities of ZeolCat.pt group are sustained by a range of experimental and modelling abilities that have access to, several characterization techniques and facilities to evaluate the properties and catalytic performances of materials and computational techniques, such as data science management and kinetic modelling to better understand catalysts under action and optimize their final design.
